The Leatherneck Warriors Dragonboat Team headed to Montgomery, Alabama to compete in the 11th annual Montgomery Dragon Boat Festival on the Alabama River. Competing with more than 10 teams, the Warriors entered a 20-person and a 10-person boat to race against local teams containing paddlers far younger than the Warriors senior-team members.
The 20-person boat placed second and third in its two preliminary heats and earned a spot in the 3-boat 200 meter final. The Warriors finished second in the final to the Montgomery Fire & Rescue team, winning a silver medal for the 9 men and 11 women in the Warriors boat. The 10-person team paddled to first place in its two preliminary heats, but was beat out for gold by the Lanier Superdragons team.
Warriors' Coach Lee Cerovac, a retired Marine, said, "We love this event. Montgomery is a fantastic host city, and the organizers put on a great event. We love coming here to compete against these young team and show them what a senior team can do." Captain Robin Lockerby added her thoughts. "Congratulations to the Fire & Rescue Team. We don't like to come in second, but we can accept finishing behind these heroes."
Laraine McDonald, a Warriors paddler added, "It is a joy to be part of this event where the proceeds benefit River Regions Trails".
